What is a herdshare?

A herdshare is a way to enjoy fresh raw milk from animals you partly own. Rather than buying milk, you purchase an ownership interest in our herd. As a co-owner, you're entitled to a pro-rata share of the dairy produced by the herd, and you pay an ongoing boarding fee for us to house, feed, milk, and care for your cows on your behalf.

Herdshare members own a share of the herd — not a whole animal. Your share is your ownership interest, and that's what entitles you to a portion of what the herd produces. A half share typically yields about a half gallon a week and a full share about a gallon, though actual volume rises and falls with the herd and is never guaranteed. The cows stay on our farm, where we handle all the daily care.

Why do I need to join the herdshare to get raw milk?

Colorado law doesn't allow farms to sell raw milk for human consumption. What we can do is sell you a share of our herd. Owning a share makes you a part-owner of the cows, and owners are entitled to a pro-rata share of the dairy their own animals produce. Your ongoing boarding fee covers feeding, milking, and caring for your cows on your behalf — it isn't a payment for milk.

How should I store it, and how long does it last?

Keep it cold — the back of the fridge, not the door. Raw milk holds up best at a consistent temperature, and it's at its best in the first several days.

How do you keep the milk clean and safe?

Careful handling and sanitation aren't a step in our process — they're the process. We're meticulous about both, and we test our milk every month to confirm our practices are holding up.

Do you have milk year-round?

Our supply rises and falls with the herd. Every cow gets a three-month dry period before she calves, so at any given time some of our cows aren't milking. We stagger calving to keep milk flowing year-round, and we'll always tell you ahead of time if supply is going to be tight.

What am I agreeing to by joining?

By joining the herd, you agree to our Member Terms and Agreement.

Any dairy we make — cream, yogurt, and coffee creamer — has to come from your own share of the herd's production, which is why each item is members-only. Your share is a one-time $50 buy-in, and your ongoing boarding fee continues for as long as you're a member.
